Rival Palestinian groups Hamas and Fatah have reached an agreement towards forming a government of technocrats ending years of political division and bloodshed. Palestinians say they have been continuously disappointed in their respective leaders, but hope a change is at hand. The decision comes at a time when US-led talks between Israelis and Palestinians appear to be failing. Al Jazeera’s Atia Abawi reports from Ramallah.

Yousef Al-Helou, Gazan journalist, comment on FaceBook, 24 April 2014

Shortly after the signing of the historic deal in Gaza to end over 7 years of split between Fatah and Hamas, Israel’s (prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared): The Palestinian president(Abbas) has to choose between making peace with Israel or reconciliation with the ‘Terror’ referring to Hamas. This surely reflects Israel’s fears, because Palestinian national unity is Israel’s greatest fear. Ordinary Palestinians are sceptical, they welcome the deal with cautious optimism. They want to see practical implementation on the ground.
