Unpublished letter to Press by Lois,

‘Berlin prepares to mark 25 years since the fall of the Wall’. (Press 8 Nov)

We were in Jerusalem exactly five years ago, watching the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. We can clearly remember Hilary Clinton saying , “..there are other walls that exist that we have to overcome and we will be working together to accomplish that”, because we said to ourselves, “Yeah right!”

I have a photo of my husband standing by the so-called “Separation Wall”, twice the height of the Berlin Wall, declared illegal by the International Court of Justice in 2004 . At this point, the Wall was built on land confiscated from Abu Dis University, shutting off access to East Jerusalem for students, school children, people needing specialist medical help, farmers wanting to access markets, Christians and Muslims wanting to pray at their holy sites.

Germans had to wait 28 years for their Wall to come down. How long will Palestinians have to wait?

Lois,

Christchurch.

I also submitted a letter to the Press on the same subject, but it was not published either. What does get published these days is how to flatten The Press after you have unwrapped it.
