Israel has forced Women’s Boat to Gaza off its course

6 Oct

BREAKING NEWS: The Israeli Occupation Forces have illegally intercepted the Women’s Boat to Gaza in international waters, and forced it off course. Meanwhile Israel has conducted more than 25 bombing raids near Gaza City. NZ Green Party MP Marama Davidson is among the 13 women currently being detained – above is her pre-recorded statement: [Video by Yudit Ilany, Israel Social TV, Published 6 October, 2016]

Early this morning all contact with the Zaytouna-Oliva was lost and the Israeli Occupation Navy has illegally surrounded it in international waters (latest recorded position: Lat+31.906033 Lon+33.757630 – about 35 miles off the coast of Gaza) and has forced it off its course to Gaza. It is believed that the boat is currently being forced to the Israeli port of Ashdod, where all of her crew are expected to be detained. On board are 13 women, including NZ Green MP Marama Davidson, Mairead Maguire, the 1976 Nobel peace laureate from Northern Ireland, Fauziah Hasan, a doctor from Malaysia, and retired US army colonel Ann Wright. Take urgent action to protect them now – see below! Details of all of the participants are here.

Please take action now. Demand that Israel ensure the safety & respect of all the women, and immediately releases the Women’s Boat to Gaza and all on board, and allow her to continue to her destination – the port of Gaza City.

Background bio for Marama Davidson:

Marama is an environmentalist and human rights advocate. She is a member of the New Zealand Parliament as a representative of the Green Party, and spokesperson for Human Rights. She worked for the Human Rights Commission from 2003 to 2012. She has worked part-time for Breastfeeding New Zealand, she was a ‘Think Tank Member’ for the Owen Glenn Inquiry on Child Abuse and Domestic Violence, and founding member of Te Wharepora Hou Māori Women’s Collective.

Marama was selected to represent NZ on the international Women’s Boat to Gaza, to challenge Israel’s illegal & inhumane blockade of the Gaza Strip, and express friendship and solidarity with the besieged Palestinian people. Kia Ora Gaza facilitated her participation and set up an appeal to support this peaceful mission.

QUOTE: “I am participating in the Women’s Boats to Gaza flotilla to highlight the crucial role of women in keeping their communities afloat, particularly in post-conflict situations. As an indigenous woman myself, I want to stand alongside the women of Gaza and to draw attention to the ongoing humanitarian crisis there.”

NOTE: Kia Ora Gaza and the Green Party have both previously sent two letters each to the NZ Government requesting the government demand that Israel allows the Women’s Boat to Gaza safe and unhindered passage. These letters remain unanswered. On 26 September, the House passed a motion tabled by fellow Green MP Catherine Delahunty, supporting the Women’s Boat to Gaza and MP Marama Davidson’s participation.
