Several hundred supporters were at the quayside celebration in Bergen, Norway, to show their solidarity with Palestinians earlier today and bid farewell to the lead Freedom Flotilla boat Al Awda (The Return).

Three other flotilla boats will later join the Al Awda on the combined voyage to break Israel’s illegal blockade of Gaza. Many eminent participants on board will represent over 20 countries from around the world, including New Zealand. The Al Awda is a former Arctic fishing trawler that will be donated to the fishermen of Gaza upon arrival in the port of Gaza.

The first Norwegian leg is from Bergen to Leirvik on the island Stord, a centre for the Norwegian offshore industry, to celebrate May Day with trade unionists and elected politicians in support of the Freedom Flotilla.

While sailing southwards from Bergen the Al Awda was met by a big merchant ship which sent this message on the VHF Channel: ‘Good luck to you on your way to Gaza.’

Kia Ora Gaza is a member of the international Freedom Flotilla Coalition, and will facilitate a prominent NZ human rights advocate to join the final Mediterranean leg of the mission to break Israel’s illegal blockade of Gaza.
